In treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), surgical, endoscopic, and pharmacologic approaches all vary in their reported efficacies. To date, there are no direct comparisons of the gold standard treatment of surgical laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF) and endoscopic transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF).
In the current network meta-analysis, researchers compared the effectiveness of LNF versus TIF for treating GERD. Data were from over 1100 patients enrolled in seven randomized, controlled trials in which LNF or TIF was directly compared with either a sham procedure or proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy. Quality of reporting across studies ranged from very low to moderate.
