To evaluate the outcomes of hysteroscopic versus laparoscopic tubal sterilization, investigators in France conducted an observational cohort study using national data from 2010 through 2014 in some 105,000 women, of whom 71,000 and 34,000 underwent hysteroscopic and laparoscopic sterilization, respectively.
Hysteroscopic compared with laparoscopic sterilization was associated with lower rates of perioperative surgical (0.13% vs. 0.78%) and medical (0.06% vs. 0.11%) complications; however, during the first year after the procedure, hysteroscopic sterilization was associated with a higher overall rate of gynecologic reoperation (5.65% vs. 1.76%).
