Housing instability can take many forms, including homelessness, multiple moves, or excessive costs for rent/utilities, and may contribute to racial and ethnic health disparities. Whether milder forms of housing instability such as being behind on rent payment affect child health outcomes has not previously been studied.
In a multisite study conducted in urban primary clinics and pediatric emergency departments, over 22,000 low-income parents of children aged ≤48 months were surveyed about housing instability and health status in the past 12 months.
