Several community-based studies have revealed an association between use of antipsychotics and pneumonia, but that association has not been evaluated in hospitalized patients. Researchers retrospectively studied 7 years' worth of data on more than 146,000 adult inpatients at a large academic medical center; data on patients admitted to psychiatric services or patients with primary or secondary psychotic disorders were excluded.
Antipsychotic exposure occurred in 7% of hospitalizations, and aspiration pneumonia developed in 0.4% of hospitalizations.
