After endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for removal of common bile duct (CBD) stones identified during cholecystectomy, a significant portion of patients will develop recurrent biliary stone disease in their lifetime. To identify risk factors for recurrence, researchers retrospectively reviewed data from over 600 patients who underwent ERCP after cholecystectomy during a 10-year period.
A striking 19% of patients developed recurrent stones after their initial ERCP. In univariate analysis, risk factors for recurrence included: ≥2 stones, stone size ≥10 mm, CBD diameter ≥15 mm, an angulated bile duct, cholesterol stones (vs. pigment), need for balloon dilatation or large balloon (>1 mm) dilatation, and a history of undergoi…
