In randomized controlled trials, early psychosis intervention (EPI) programs for first-episode psychosis reduced psychopathology and improved quality of life, vocational outcomes, and adherence to care. EPI programs are concentrated early on, ordinarily transitioning to less-intense medication management. To learn about their value beyond the early period, investigators used registry data from all hospital, emergency department (ED), and outpatient visits in Ontario, Canada, to construct a cohort of individuals with nonaffective psychosis first diagnosed between 1997 and 2003; 530 EPI users were propensity-score matched to 992 individuals who were eligible for the EPI program but did not use it (age <40, 90%).
