States regulate firearm sales, tracking, and restrictions on purchases. In a cross-sectional study of over 3000 U.S. counties in 48 states, investigators studied the association between state firearm laws, proximity to states with more lenient laws, and firearm suicide and homicide rates from 2010 to 2014. A home-state policy score was assigned based on six categories of laws: dealer regulation, background checks, license to purchase, manufacturing standards, reporting requirements for lost or stolen guns, and restrictions on multiple purchases.
