The confluence of traumatic events with moral injury (psychological distress caused by acting or failing to act in accord with what one believes to be right, just, and fair) has been linked preliminarily with higher risks for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), notably in combat veterans. To examine this issue more closely, researchers used data from a 2013 Canadian Forces survey completed by 4854 people who had served in Afghanistan; over half had received mental-health trainings initiated before, during, or after deployment. The survey obtained data on demographics, childhood victimizations, and combat trauma experiences and screened respondents for past-year PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD).
