Study findings are mixed as to whether eradication of Helicobacter pylori reduces the risk for metachronous gastric cancer. To further investigate that hypothesis, investigators in South Korea randomized 470 H. pylori–infected patients with endoscopically treated early gastric cancer (EGC) or high-grade adenoma to receive H. pylori eradication triple therapy or placebo for 7 days. Endoscopic evaluation was performed at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year and then every 6 or 12 months. Results were as follows:
