The U.S. recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 g/kg/day (<2 ounces for a 70-kg man), regardless of age or physical function. Prior studies have suggested that increasing protein intake could lead to increased lean body mass (LBM), better physical function, or both. This 2×2 factorial-design trial involved 92 older men (mean age, 73; mean baseline body-mass index, 30.3 kg/m2) with some physical-function limitations and protein intake that was less than the RDA. They were randomized to daily protein intake of 0.8 g/kg or 1.3 g/kg plus weekly intramuscular testosterone enanthate (100 mg) or placebo. Participants were instructed to maintain usual exercise and to avoid vigorous resistance exercise.
