An FDA-approved, newly available miniature forceps allows an endosonographer to perform biopsy of the pancreatic cyst wall to obtain true histologic samples. In the current study, researchers evaluated the ability of the miniature forceps biopsy (MFB) to distinguish between mucinous and nonmucinous cysts, detect lesions at high risk for malignancy, and reach a specific cyst type diagnosis. Traditional cyst fluid analysis and MFB histological analysis were performed in 42 patients.
The overall diagnostic yield to differentiate mucinous from nonmucinous cysts was 48% with cyst fluid cytology and 62% with MFB (P=0.2). Cytology identified 55% of cysts as high risk for malignancy compared with 72% via MFB (P=0.1). Both tests did poorly with regar…
