Checkpoint inhibitors for various cancers increased the risk for colitis, pneumonitis, hypothyroidism, hypophysitis, and rash compared with standard-of-care chemotherapies.
To characterize the incidence of immune-related adverse events associated with checkpoint inhibitor cancer drugs, investigators conducted a meta-analysis of 13 industry-sponsored, international, randomized trials in which toxicities of anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1 agents were compared with control treatments in a total of 6676 cancer patients.
The study involved metastatic non–small-cell lung cancer (7 trials), melanoma (3), renal cell carcinoma (1), bladder cell carcinoma (1), and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (1).
