Although there is evidence that cardiovascular health is improved with modest alcohol use, it is discouraged among patients with liver disease, owing to the potential for synergistic liver injury. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NAFLD/NASH) is one of the most common causes of liver disease, and up to two thirds of these patients continue to drink alcohol.
