To evaluate the rate and characteristics of U.S. hospital readmissions for nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVGIB), investigators performed a retrospective cohort study using a national database containing over 200,000 admissions for NVGIB in 2014. They found the following:
For original (index) admissions
Less than 5% of patients presented with hemorrhagic shock and <1% required mechanical ventilation or were discharged to a rehabilitation facility.
The Charlson comorbidity index was ≥3 in 37%.
Endoscopy was performed in 86% and endoscopic therapy in 25%.
The in-hospital and 30-day mortality rates were each 2%.
For readmissions
The 30-day, all-cause readmission rate was 13%.
