Based on a review of the most recent evidence on the diagnosis, staging, and management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), experts have provided supplementary guidance to the 2010 clinical guideline from the AASLD.
Surveillance
Conduct primary surveillance using ultrasound with or without alpha fetoprotein (AFP) testing every 6 months.
Do not use computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging as primary surveillance modalities.
Continue HCC surveillance in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV)–related cirrhosis who have cleared the virus.
