A frustrating aspect of treating patients with ampullary adenomas is the high rate of recurrence even after apparently complete endoscopic removal. In a prospective study, researchers assessed whether intraductal radiofrequency ablation (ID-RFA) delivered via a catheter to the bile ducts during endoscopic ampullectomy could reduce the risk for recurrence.
Twenty patients (mean age, 67 years) with histologically proven endobiliary adenoma after a previous endoscopic papillectomy underwent one ID-RFA session with biliary stent placement. Five patients also received a pancreatic stent. Results were as follows:
