Much current evidence for the benefit of clinical pathways for asthma care in children is based on data from individual hospitals. These authors conducted a multicenter, retrospective study of administrative data from 42 children's hospitals to compare the efficacy of asthma clinical pathways (147,838 patients) and routine asthma care (41,493 patients) in children ages 2 to 17 years (median age, 5 years) discharged over a 10-year period.
Of the 42 hospitals, 25 had pathways in place throughout the 10-year period, 15 implemented pathways during the period, and 2 did not use pathways; 20 hospitals made improvements to pathways (most commonly integration into the electronic medical record or revisions to content).
