Varicose veins with superficial venous reflux can be treated with various endovenous techniques, including ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and thermal (laser or radiofrequency) ablation. In this U.K. study, researchers examined whether these interventions facilitate healing of venous leg ulcers.
A total of 450 patients with venous ulcers (present for 6 weeks to 6 months) and venous reflux were randomized to receive either compression therapy plus early endovenous ablation or compression therapy plus deferred endovenous ablation. In the deferred group, ablation was offered if ulcers had not healed by 6 months or after ulcers had healed with compression alone; by 1 year, 76% of patients in the deferred group had undergone ablation.
