While maternal inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity at conception has been shown to affect conception and pregnancy outcomes, less is known about the possible effect of paternal IBD activity.
Investigators surveyed a voluntary cohort of over 250 male patients with Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis who had attempted to conceive or did conceive a child with their partner. Participants reported months to conception, need for assisted reproductive techniques, pregnancy outcomes, and disease activity for the 6 months preceding conception. Results were as follows:
Thirty percent reported difficulty with conception.
Men with IBD diagnosed prior to the pregnancy were more likely to report difficulty with conception (38% vs. 20%).
