Use of pneumococcal vaccines for children and adults has decreased the incidence of pneumococcal pneumonia and changed the causative serotypes. Although Streptococcus pneumoniae is still thought to be a very common cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), current culture and urine antigen assay techniques identify this organism in only about 5% of hospitalized CAP patients.
