Over the past decade, interest has increased in investigating the role of neuroinflammation in the pathogenesis of Parkinson disease (PD). In light of recent evidence of a genetic-immunomodulator link between PD and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers examined administrative claims databases to determine the incidence of PD in more than 144,000 patients with IBD, compared with about 720,000 matched individuals without IBD. To explore whether drugs aimed at downregulating inflammatory processes might delay PD onset, they also assessed whether exposure to anti–tumor necrosis factor (anti-TNF) therapy would mitigate the risk for PD.
