People with adenomas are at increased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) and are advised to undergo surveillance colonoscopy based on polyp characteristics. U.S. guidelines recommend a 3-year interval for those with advanced adenomas (size ≥1 cm, high-grade dysplasia, or villous histology) or three or more adenomas, and a 5- to 10-year interval for those with less than three nonadvanced adenomas.
To assess the long-term incidence of CRC based on adenoma findings, investigators conducted a post hoc analysis of data from nearly 16,000 participants who had undergone colonoscopy as part of a cancer screening trial. Participants were followed for a median of 13 years.
