In 2014 an outbreak of 162 cases of autochthonous transmission of dengue virus (DENV-1) was documented in metropolitan Tokyo, the first outbreak in Japan in >60 years (NEJM JW Infect Dis Jan 2015 and Emerg Infect Dis 2015; 21:517). This event prompted investigators to seek to identify the mosquito transmitting the virus so they could tailor interventions to the responsible vector. They collected >2000 female and almost 1000 male Aedes albopictus mosquitoes (Asian tiger mosquitos) from six locations in Tokyo.
