For most lesions, drug-eluting stents (DES) have proven better than bare-metal stents (BMS), due to lower rates of restenosis and repeat revascularization procedures. However, comparisons of these stents for saphenous vein graft lesions have yielded conflicting results on safety and efficacy. In a large multicenter, double-blind trial, researchers randomized 597 patients with previous coronary-artery bypass grafting to DES or BMS when undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) on saphenous vein grafts at 25 Veterans Affairs hospitals (NCT01121224).
