Antimicrobial resistance in N. gonorrhoeae is a public health threat. Investigators used whole-genome sequencing (WGS) linked with epidemiological data on clinical isolates collected from patients with gonorrhea at hospitals and clinics in 20 European countries.
To describe the gonococcal population in those countries, they examined a total of 1054 isolates with WGS data linked to antimicrobial resistance profiles and epidemiological data; 85% came from men, and the median patient ages were 31 years for men and 24 years for women. Patient sexual orientation was available for less than 50% of isolates; when available, 50% of isolates from men were from men who have sex with men (MSM).
