In a retrospective study from the University of Chicago, investigators reviewed outcomes in 17 patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who underwent segmental resection or ileorectostomy for neoplasia. Three patients had cancer and the remainder had dysplasia. After a median follow-up of 17 months (range, 3–228), results were as follows:
Four patients developed low-grade dysplasia; one lesion was a sporadic adenoma.
The median time to identification of dysplasia was 49 months (range, 25–125).
No high-grade dysplasia or cancer was detected.
Two patients went on to completion proctocolectomy because of unresectable lesions.
