Women typically live longer than men and exhibit differences in disease expression and reaction to medications; thus, women can be particularly affected by healthcare costs, access issues, and discriminatory policies. The Health and Public Policy Committee of the American College of Physicians (ACP) has therefore made the following seven recommendations to improve the health of U.S. women.
Health insurers should cover evidence-based care for women of all ages without imposing higher premiums or cost sharing.
Family and medical leave should be universal and provide at least 6 weeks' paid leave.
ACP opposes restrictions that unduly limit access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare provided by healthcare professionals or facilities.
