Adding atezolizumab to bevacizumab and chemotherapy improved survival in chemotherapy-naive patients with non–small-cell lung cancer, regardless of EGFR or ALK mutation status.
In a prior study, treatment with the anti–PD-L1 antibody atezolizumab combined with platinum-doublet chemotherapy demonstrated promising activity in chemotherapy-naive patients with advanced non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC; J Clin Oncol 2017; 35:Suppl 15:9092).
To further evaluate the effect of combining atezolizumab with chemotherapy in this setting, investigators conducted an industry-funded, international, open-label, randomized phase III trial (IMpower150) in which 1202 chemotherapy-naive patients with nonsquamous NSCLC received one of three treatments: atezolizumab-carboplatin-paclitaxel (ACP), bevacizumab-carboplatin-paclitaxel (BCP), or atezolizumab-bevacizumab-carboplatin-paclitaxel (ABCP).
Results comparing ABCP and BCP were as fol…
