Elective Oocyte Cryopreservation Sometimes Leads to Regret

Although decision regret was uncommon among survey participants, the need for careful and complete counseling cannot be overstated.

Elective oocyte cryopreservation (EOC) is increasing among women seeking to “prevent” future infertility. Investigators at a single academic practice used a decision regret scale (DRS; range, 0–100) to determine the extent to which 201 survey respondents undergoing EOC between 2012 and 2016 (mean age, 36) regretted their decision and the factors associated with such regret. DRS scores >25 indicated moderate-to-severe regret.

Although median DRS score was 0 (indicating no regret) and mean was 10, 16% of respondents experienced moderate-to-severe regret and 50% reported some regret.
