New mothers with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who receive biologic therapy are concerned about their nursing infants' exposure to these agents. Using data from a prospective, multicenter, national registry of pregnant women with IBD, researchers studied detectability of biologics in breast milk and whether exposure affected infection rates or developmental delay in infants.
Among over 800 total participants, breast milk samples were taken from 72 women who were breast-feeding and receiving biologic therapy. Drug concentrations in milk were determined at multiple time points. Data on infant infections and development were obtained from mothers and pediatricians.
