Contrast-Enhanced EUS-Guided Biopsy of Liver Metastases: The Next Frontier?

A single-center study shows the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound for biopsy of liver lesions.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) can visualize both the left and right lobes of the liver to a very high level of detail. Although EUS is routinely used to evaluate and treat small pancreatic and extrapancreatic lesions, relatively few endosonographers have experience with EUS-guided biopsy of liver lesions. In a recent paper, researchers described the use of contrast-enhanced EUS to evaluate and conduct biopsy of liver metastases in 30 patients.

Before contrast enhancement, 22 of 30 total hepatic lesions were visible on standard B-mode EUS imaging, increasing to 29 after the administration of contrast.
