The association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and later cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been consistently demonstrated. Evidence of associations between HDP and traditional CVD risk factors is less consistent, with conclusions hampered by inadequate consideration of potential confounding variables and small sample sizes. Investigators affiliated with the Nurses' Health Study (NHS) II used this powerful data source to determine the relationship of HDP to chronic hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and elevated cholesterol.
