In areas of the world with a high HIV burden such as sub-Saharan Africa, women represent more than 50% of new infections and spend much of their reproductive years pregnant or breast-feeding. Due to continued uncertainty about the relative risk for HIV infection for pregnant versus nonpregnant women, researchers designed a study to quantify the risk of HIV acquisition per coital act after condomless sex with a partner who has HIV infection. The study population involved data from two randomized clinical trials of women without HIV infection from seven African countries.
