In 2009, a distinct strain of influenza — A(H1N1)pdm09 — emerged and subsequently acquired mutations. During the 2015–2016 influenza season, vaccine effectiveness (VE) against the strain was observed to be reduced among patients in some age groups enrolled in the Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness (Flu VE) Network study.
To examine this observation further, investigators at the CDC and several universities analyzed Flu VE data from the 2010–2011 through the 2015–2016 influenza seasons among populations born at different times. The researchers used a test-negative study design to compare the odds of vaccination among cases of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 versus the odds of vaccination among influenza virus–negative patients.
