Background
The first of two new USPSTF guidelines updates the 2009 recommendations on nontraditional risk factors in cardiovascular disease (CVD) screening among asymptomatic adults (NEJM JW Gen Med Jan 1 2010 and Ann Intern Med 2009 Oct 6; 151:474), now focusing on the ankle-brachial index (ABI), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and coronary artery calcium scoring (CAC). In addition to using the Framingham Risk Score as a traditional comparator, this guideline also considers the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Pooled Cohort Equation.
