Detection of angioectasias, the most common source of small bowel bleeding, usually requires capsule endoscopy. Physician review of capsule endoscopy is a tedious and time-consuming process that is not entirely accurate.
Using a French national database of still-frame images from capsule endoscopy, investigators developed and tested a computer-aided diagnostic algorithm to detect angioectasias. They identified 600 images of typical nonhemorrhagic gastrointestinal angioectasias, using 300 to train a neural network on features of angioectasias and the other 300 for the network to classify new images based on features learned, creating a segmentation algorithm to detect and localize angioectasias.
