Programmatic colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is potentially better than opportunistic screening as it allows for improved utilization of resources, quality monitoring, and a systematic approach to screening and surveillance. However, there are few population-based data regarding the effectiveness of programmatic screening.
In a descriptive study, investigators examined changes in screening participation and cancer incidence and mortality after introduction of programmatic CRC screening in a large, community-based U.S. health plan population. Prior to 2006, screening was largely opportunistic but, starting in 2007, transitioned to annual fecal immunochemical test (FIT) outreach to members, along with colonoscopy by request.
