Racial Disparities in HIV Incidence Not Solvable by Increasing PrEP Uptake

Proportional increases in uptake of preexposure prophylaxis among white and African-American men who have sex with men would only widen racial disparities in HIV incidence.

HIV incidence rates vary significantly between white men who have sex with men (WMSM) and African-American men who have sex with men (AAMSM). There are also marked disparities in the uptake of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) between WMSM and AAMSM, currently estimated at approximately 5% and 2.5% respectively. Using agent-based modeling techniques, researchers simulated the impact of various PrEP uptake scenarios on HIV transmission in Atlanta between 2015 and 2024. The model accounted for individual behaviors and characteristics.
