Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)–guided biliary drainage is a field undergoing rapid development. Because of the invasiveness and off-label nature of these procedures, they have mostly been done in patients with unresectable malignancy.
In a retrospective study in Japan, investigators examined procedural success in 37 patients with benign biliary disease undergoing EUS-guided biliary drainage due to the presence of surgically altered biliary anatomy. Balloon-assisted endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) had been unsuccessful and standard ERCP was not an option.
