Although nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases, no specific drug therapies have yet been identified to treat it. Now, researchers report phase II safety and efficacy findings on the investigative drug GS-0976 for treatment of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).
Investigators randomized 127 patients with NASH to receive GS-0976 20 mg, GS-0976 5 mg, or placebo daily for 12 weeks. NASH was defined by liver biopsy findings indicating NASH and stage 1–3 fibrosis, or by hepatic steatosis ≥8% on magnetic resonance imaging and liver stiffness ≥2.5 kPa on magnetic resonance enterography.
