Elevated serum levels of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), including leucine, isoleucine and valine, are shown to be biomarkers of elevated risks for diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity. These conditions are also risk factors for the development of pancreatic cancer.
To determine the relationship between total serum BCAA level and pancreatic cancer risk, researchers performed a nested, case-control study among approximately 30,000 individuals aged 40 to 69 years enrolled in a population-based, prospective cohort study in Japan. Patients gave blood samples for serum BCAA level assessment. Median follow-up was 16 years.
