Guidelines on antibiotic stewardship in hematology have been published by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA; Clin Inf Dis 2011; 52:427) and the European Conference on Infections in Leukemia (ECIL) group (Haematologica 2013; 98:1826). Both publications encourage de-escalation and discontinuation of antibiotics started empirically for febrile neutropenia (FN) for responding patients, even if neutropenia persists.
