The most commonly performed procedure to treat obesity is laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG), which carries a risk for new-onset gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) is a new endoscopic alternative that mimics the restrictive anatomical changes produced by LSG, while maintaining the anatomical structure of the stomach.
In a single-center, retrospective study, researchers compared outcomes in 54 patients who underwent ESG and 83 matched patients who underwent LSG. Despite matching, LSG patients had higher rates of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea.
