At most centers, screening for pancreatic cancer is concentrated on high-risk individuals (i.e., those with a strong family history of pancreatic cancer or specific high-risk genetic syndromes). In these patients, some evidence suggests that changes in chronic pancreatitis might be a marker for pancreatic cancer risk and therefore a possible screening target.
To further test that hypothesis, investigators at one center retrospectively compared changes in chronic pancreatitis detected on endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) between 65 high-risk individuals undergoing pancreatic cancer screening and 118 control patients undergoing EUS for nonpancreaticobiliary indications.
