Two new studies highlight novel drug delivery systems in animal models of neurodegenerative disease.
Hsu and colleagues expanded on recent research into a novel delivery method and a possible treatment for Alzheimer disease (AD). Focused ultrasound (FUS) increases drug availability by making the blood–brain barrier more porous, allowing larger molecules to cross the barrier. FUS activates microglia, thus lessening amyloid accumulation, and has been shown to be safe in animals (Theranostics 2017; 7:3573).
