Despite the growing popularity of assisted reproductive technologies (ART), the long-term sequalae are relatively unknown. Early evidence suggests that ART can alter cardiovascular risk in animals and humans. These researchers assessed systemic vascular function in 54 ART-conceived adolescents and young adults and in 43 age- and sex-matched controls from similar socioeconomic backgrounds; vascular function had been assessed 5 years previously.
Values on ambulatory blood pressure [BP] monitoring, the primary outcome, were higher in ART-conceived participants (systolic BP, 119.8 mm Hg vs. 115.7 mm Hg in controls; diastolic BP, 71.4 mm Hg vs. 69.1 mm Hg), and ART participants were more likely to meet criteria for arterial hypertension (8/52 vs.…
