FDA Approval of Eravacycline for Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections

This new treatment option is likely to be useful in very select patients.

The FDA recently approved eravacycline (Xerava) for treatment of complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) in adults. Eravacycline is a fluorocycline antibiotic in the tetracycline class. With the notable exceptions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia that show resistance, eravacycline demonstrates excellent activity in vitro against a wide spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial pathogens, including anaerobes, as well as vancomycin-resistant enterococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumanii, and Enterobacteriaceae expressing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases or having other resistance-conferring mechanisms (Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2013; 57:5548).
