Most adolescent e-cigarette users report using open-system, refillable devices, which are arguably the riskiest.
To date, few data are available on e-cigarette product preferences among adolescents. In the current report, researchers present results on this topic from a nationally representative longitudinal sample survey on tobacco use.
Approximately 13,500 adolescents (aged 12–17 years) participated in survey wave one (2013–2014), and over 12,000 in wave two (2014–2015). Approximately 300 respondents in each wave who reported regular use during the past 30 days were asked about characteristics of the e-cigarette product they used most frequently. Results were as follows:
Most respondents reported use of open-system, refillable devices (versus closed-system devices; i.e., disposable products).
Nine of 10 reported use of flavored e-cigarettes.
