Perinatal Zika virus (ZIKV) infection results in a recognizable congenital syndrome that includes microcephaly, central nervous system abnormalities, and ophthalmologic findings. As with other congenital infections, such as cytomegalovirus and toxoplasma, infants can be clinically asymptomatic but have occult eye abnormalities (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Jul 2016 and JAMA Ophthalmol 2016; 134:912).
Researchers characterized ophthalmologic findings in 224 infants born during the 2015–2016 ZIKV outbreak in Brazil who had symptoms of or confirmatory laboratory testing for ZIKV infection or were born to mothers who had symptoms or confirmed ZIKV infection during pregnancy.
