Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for patients with prostate cancer is strongly associated with the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
To determine whether it is also associated with the development of liver disease, investigators conducted an observational study of more than 82,000 men (age, 66 years) in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare database who received a diagnosis of localized prostate cancer from 1992 to 2009. Those with pre-existing diabetes, liver disease, or metabolic syndrome were excluded. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of nonalcoholic chronic liver disease, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
A total of 37.5% of patients received ADT within 6 months of diagnosis.…
